Slow Cooker Pulled Pork w/ Molasses BBQ Sauce

Pork shoulder was $.99/lb at Hyvee here recently. I hadn’t been thinking about doing pulled pork, but when you get an opportunity like this, its like destiny picks you up by the heels and smacks you around a little and says, Pulled Pork Man!! But really, what better way to use a pork shoulder than to make some homemade BBQ sauce and slow cook it into melt-in-your-mouth consistency and enjoy with a cool salad and maybe even some tortillas or (if you do buns) buns.

The first step is thinking ahead. I seasoned and cooked this bugger for 12 hours on low. I will post the sauce recipe, but for the meat, its a little less interesting: simply season generously all over with season salt, place fat side up in slow cooker, then cook on low for 12 hours. After it is tender as all get out (i’m talking sliceable with a spoon), then remove the fat with said spoon, dump out most, but not all of the liquid (some will help keep the meat moist), and finally remove bone.

Molasses Barbeque Sauce:

1 tbsp butter

1 tbsp minced garlic

8oz apple sauce

1 1/4 cup yellow mustard

3/4 cup molasses

3/4 cup maple syrup

1 1/4 tsp ground mustard

3/4 tsp cinnamon

1 1/4 tsp onion powder

2 dashes red pepper flake

1 tsp black pepper

1/4 cup soy sauce (i use Braggs non-gmo soy)

2 tsp smoked paprika

1 tsp smoke sea salt

Saute garlic in butter until brown, then everything else and bring to a bubbling simmer, stir frequently for 15 minutes and allow o cool before storing in jars.



For the pulled pork i recommend separating pork with 2 forks and adding sauce and tasting then adding and tasting until desired flavor.
